Panama Canal Now Open
On June 26 2016, the Panama Canal opened the new third lane of the shipping channel. The expansion will allow for bigger ships and could mean more fuel extracts from the United States.
The project was delayed two years due to worker conflicts and cost issues, but without the expansion, the canal could have been an obsolete route due to not being able to accommodate large ships.
The new canal is said to accommodate ships that can carry up to 14,000 containers (truck size) and long steel boxes which typically transport merchandise and goods.
