First Mate Productions
A Unique Opportunity
There are all kinds of problems that we face on a daily basis. Some we have seen before and some are one of a kind situations. This was one of those. Gulf Coast Air & Hydraulics was contacted by a company in California, “First Mate Productions”. This is a company that does marine work for the movie industry. We were told that Walt Disney Pictures was making a series of Pirate movies based on their Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney World in Orlando, Florida.
The Black Pearl
First Mate planned on building a Pirate ship called the Black Pearl. They needed us to design, build and install a steering and propulsion system that could be operated in hiding. They wanted it to appear that Captain Jack Sparrow was actually steering the Pearl when in fact their was a pilot deep inside the ship that with the aid of closed circuit cameras hidden on the outside of the vessel could sit at a steering and control station and when the Pirates steered to the port the Pirate ship would in fact move to port.
“They needed us to design, build and install a steering and propulsion system that could be operated in hiding.”
A Custom Built Solution
This was no small undertaking. We had to incorporate our steering, engine controls, rudder angle indicators and cameras that not only showed where we were going but also so we could see the actions of the Pirate that was steering to insure an authentic look. Another problem fixed.
